Unfortunately, if you have invested so much time in training people to use a product and built a formidable base of intellectual capital in their file formats, moving to another vendor is not an option, and so customers are having to absorb the additional costs of subscription over perpetual licensing. In the engineering and scientific software world there are widely different views, and, where vendors such as Autodesk have taken the plunge, they have many disgruntled customers. This bold move was watched with interest by many software vendors, who saw Adobe’s revenue take a dip following the move, but since then those revenues have increased. We can all blame Adobe for the move from perpetual licensing to subscription licensing.
